Heidi

Dachshund Β· Female Β· Young Β· 3 years

Meet sweet little Heidi, our nervous Dachshund mix looking for her second chance in a patient, loving home. Heidi came to us as a stray meaning we unfortunately do not have any information on her history. Heidi has found the transition to London kennels very frightening and has struggled to come out of her shell. She is very shutdown and even after a week in our care has not fully bonded with her known handlers on site. She will approach her known people to sniff at them and have some tasty snacks but is not ready for fuss yet. Heidi's new family should be prepared for a long road ahead, Heidi will need patience and all the love to come out of her shell. We know there is a secret love-bug hidden behind that fear. Heidi is currently actively avoiding handling and has found loud noises quite overwhelming. As such, she is looking for a quiet adult only home to build her confidence in. Her home will ideally be in the countryside or a quieter suburban location away from the inner city with access to a secure private garden where she can adjust to her new surroundings at her own pace. Heidi is looking to be the only pet in the home whilst her confidence grows. She has been tolerant of some steady interactions with dogs but will tell off if other dogs pressure her. Heidi is ideally looking for a new family with experience with very anxious or potentially puppy farm dogs who are confident in taking on a dog who might take a significant period of time to settle and be affectionate in the way other dogs may be. With a patient approach and lots of love and dedication, it is our hope that Heidi will learn that she is safe and become the sweet, affectionate little lady we know she can be. If you have already completed our online rehoming form and would like to know more about Heidi, you can e-mail our rehoming team on to register your interest.

About Heidi

What life with Heidi looks like

Heidi is a small young adult dachshund dog waiting at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home in London.

A young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" β€” quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures β€” to let them settle.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Heidi, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Heidi?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Battersea Dogs & Cats Home handles screening and the adoption contract directly β€” TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Heidi on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Heidi if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad β€” Battersea Dogs & Cats Home will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Heidi already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported β€” ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Heidi isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work β€” that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Battersea Dogs & Cats Home early rather than rehoming privately; they know Heidi and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect β€” names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
