Henri

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 7 years

Henri was born in 2019 and originally comes from Romania, but had already been living for some time in a foster home in Germany. Despite intensive training, he strongly guarded his resources there and bit. The neutered male dog was then surrendered because Henri’s care was no longer possible due to personal circumstances within the family. At the animal shelter, Henri is initially hesitant but shows interest in people. Once he’s had some time to get to know someone, he becomes a cuddle bear and needs lots of physical contact. He’s highly eager to learn and can quickly connect contexts. He knows many tricks and masters common exercises, including those related to impulse control. However, he also learns quickly how consistent or inconsistent the person on the other end of the leash is. Anyone wanting to share their life with Henri should know the following: - Immediately after adoption, CLEAR boundaries must be set regarding what is acceptable and what isn’t (e.g., sofa access). - When setting limits or correcting him, you must fully commit—body and soul—and be prepared for resistance. - If you stand firm against his protests and confidently assert your position, things will go well. - Henri is a dog from abroad, and resource guarding may be learned behavior stemming from having suffered severe hunger in the past. - Food scraps can also be considered a resource. - All household members must support the decisions made and actively participate in his training. - He will only be rehomed to families with children aged 16 and older (requiring consistent, conscious behavior and acceptance of the situation). - You must ensure Henri doesn’t start demanding affection on his own terms and thereby take control. He gets along well with other dogs, so he would be suitable as a second dog; however, intact male dogs can sometimes be challenging. Off-leash, he displays clear intraspecies communication, both setting and accepting boundaries. On-leash, he tends to grumble, which can be prevented through calm, confident leadership. When you communicate and interact with this male dog clearly and unambiguously, you’ll have a wonderful buddy. Here, you must act with your head—not (primarily) with your emotions.

About Henri

What life with Henri looks like

Henri is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Düren und Umgebung in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Henri, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Henri?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Düren und Umgebung handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Henri on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Henri if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Düren und Umgebung will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Henri already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Henri isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Düren und Umgebung early rather than rehoming privately; they know Henri and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
