Herbie

Male · Puppy · 7 months

Herbie is a young, enthusiastic male Belgian Malinois approximately 7 months old. He comes from a location where a seizure was previously conducted by the police due to a drug investigation. He is a playful and affectionate dog who enjoys attention, toys, and activities. A game of fetch or tug-of-war with a rope? He absolutely loves it! Herbie has had some training and knows commands such as sit, stay, give paw, and release. He is eager to learn and works well for treats. When he trusts someone, he seeks out their attention and enjoys being close to them. At that moment, he doesn't have personal space: Herbie is all over you! At the same time, he needs time to adjust to new people. He will become friends in no time, at his own pace and in a controlled manner. We have already allowed Herbie to play with other dogs a few times, and he enjoys it, although he needs time to assess the situation. We do not suspect that he has had much contact with people and dogs, but with his curious and eager to learn nature, this is certainly possible! As we would expect from a young dog, Herbie loves to play. Tennis balls are ideal, and he would do anything to catch them. Once he has a tennis ball, he walks around proudly with it. What a hero! Herbie needs someone who can provide him with peace, clarity, and structure, and who can teach him to deal with new situations in a positive way. He finds it difficult to find peace on his own and therefore needs guidance to learn this. In his previous environment, there were also cats. It seems to have given him pleasure to sniff at cats, but any introduction to cats will of course need to be done calmly and under supervision. Herbie is an energetic dog, but also has a vulnerable and uncertain side. For the right person, he can grow into a wonderful companion who enjoys learning, playing, and exploring together.

About Herbie

What life with Herbie looks like

Herbie is a puppy/kitten dog waiting at Dierenasiel Genk in Genk.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Herbie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Herbie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenasiel Genk handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Herbie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Herbie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenasiel Genk will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Herbie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Herbie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenasiel Genk early rather than rehoming privately; they know Herbie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
