Hercules

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy · 4 months

A small dog sits alone by the front door waiting for its owners, who placed it there hours ago, to let it back into the apartment... This is a picture that one still sees too often in Southern Europe, and in villages it may somehow work. However, there are also neighborhoods in the middle of the city where this is completely normal - and if a dog disappears, then there is simply another one. Abuse, tethering (even for the smallest four-legged animals), neglect - all of this is everyday life, and the animal protection law in Spain is so vaguely worded that the police can do little more than ask the owners to give up their animals. When an animal rescuer close to Arca Sevilla saw a three-month-old puppy alone on the street, crying and seeking protection, she could not bear to imagine what future awaited the sad bundle of life and took the trembling creature, which didn't even have a collar, and brought it with her. Hercules, the rescuer named her little friend, but got more than just a ticket from hell, she also immediately got a loving foster mom. Our little sunshine stays with his hero until he finds a proper family - and until then, he turns his friend's life upside down with great pleasure. I have often used the term "handful of dog" here, but in Hercules's case, it fits more accurately than ever. The funny guy, now four months old (as of 03/2022), is barely bigger than a honeydew melon (and it is questionable whether he could even reach the same weight on the scale). But in this mini-dog there is a whole tough guy, and we repeatedly point out that our Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, and Yorkshires are no less dogs than our Mastiffs, German Shepherds, or Great Danes. Our button Hercules is looking for a family that knows how to turn a small puppy into a reliable and strong male dog - completely independent of how many centimeters tall he will end up being. Humor, patience, time, love, and above all, expertise - all baby dogs need these to successfully get through teething and adolescence and become a truly fantastic team player by the side of their beloved humans. So if you are not afraid of the puppy adventure and do not hold the mistaken belief that a small dog is easier to train or needs less time than a large version, then please get in touch with us. And perhaps our little dwarf will soon happily hop into your arms and your heart with shining eyes.

DE·Show original

About Hercules

What life with Hercules looks like

Hercules is a small puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hercules, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hercules?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hercules on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hercules if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hercules already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hercules isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hercules and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
