Hermes

European Shorthair · Male · Adult · 6 years

Hermes is currently in the care of animal welfare officers. He is generally sweet and enjoys being petted, but sometimes he suddenly becomes frightened and bites. He is still very uncertain and has probably had some bad experiences in his young life. If you take a broom to sweep the room, he gets panicked. He was probably chased or even beaten with a broom before. If he gets a safe home where people are patient with him, this will probably settle down quickly. He is still young. Children in his new family should be a bit older and not immediately overwhelm him. Update 08.04.2021 Hermes has been playing too rough with the other cats and has injured himself so badly that he broke a leg. He is now isolated from the others as he needs rest to heal. The animal welfare officers also want to work intensively on socializing him. He still tends to bite. He is also too aggressive with other cats, he never learned the right behavior because he was separated from his siblings and mother cat too early, just like Sirius. They need a well-socialized cat by their side, from whom they can learn the right behavior, and understanding people who already have cat experience. Update 29.06.2021 Hermes is doing well, he plays a lot with Ted, who is also looking for a home with us. He loves human contact and asks for pets and is very sweet. But if something doesn't suit him, he can still bite. He knows exactly what he wants and needs people who accept him as he is and don't force him to do anything. With a family that has more time for him, he will definitely make progress, you just have to give him a chance. Update 16.11.2022 The animal welfare officers are continuing to work on socializing Hermes better. He sometimes fights too hard with other cats and as soon as a situation overwhelms him, he also snaps at the hand of our animal welfare officers. He is just sometimes insecure and absolutely needs a person who gives him security and also a regular daily routine. Update 29.08.2023: Hermes was lucky to move to a foster home just over six months ago. There you can take better care of him. So he has already made great progress. He is now used to living with other cats and is much more relaxed. He has no problems with a balanced and active cat. And he also gets along wonderfully with the dog living there. The biting, out of insecurity, has also stopped. Now he always wants to be close to his foster mother. You just have to pay attention to his body language when petting him, so you know when it's enough for him. Otherwise, there is a snapping. He is a special cat, who is very afraid of all noises. But that is also getting better. Hermes really wants a home with understanding and patient cat friends and a few cat buddies. Just a home with stability, so he can feel comfortable. Where can he find that? Update 24.11.2024 Hermes is doing much better now! He is an incredibly sweet and loving cat. He gets along wonderfully with playful cats, and he also likes people very much. If you respect him, there are no problems with him. Especially sweet: Hermes loves to curl up on your belly and sleep peacefully there - just melting away! Unfortunately, the foster family cannot offer him a permanent home, as their dogs have problems with him and they had to separate them. That is no solution for him and the foster family in the long run. Therefore, we urgently look for a loving home for him, where he can finally arrive. Who has a heart for this special treasure? Update 24.11.2025 It is so sad that Hermes still has to wait. He is such a lovable cat, always looking for human contact. However, he doesn't like it when he is teased, because in such moments he can react annoyed and snatch lightly (without biting firmly). Unfortunately, Hermes has started limping again and will probably need anti-inflammatory medication several times a year, as his old bone fracture causes him pain. We hope that big cat lovers will be found who like Black Beauties.

DE·Show original

Hermes wartet so sehnsüchtig darauf.

About Hermes

What life with Hermes looks like

Hermes is a large adult european shorthair cat waiting at Tierhilfe Miezekatze e.V. in Germany.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hermes, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hermes?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierhilfe Miezekatze e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hermes on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hermes if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierhilfe Miezekatze e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hermes already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hermes isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierhilfe Miezekatze e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hermes and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
