Please note the ‘Contact for Availability’ function is currently not working. Please email the Rescue direct () if you are enquiring about an animal and include the animal’s name ** Sometimes, the dogs who come into our care need a little extra love, patience and understanding before they can begin to trust again. Beautiful Hero is one of those special boys, and now he is ready to start looking for the forever home he deserves. Hero arrived into our care from a pound we work closely with. He was extremely bewildered and frightened there, unable to understand what had happened or why his little world had been turned upside down. When we saw his appeal for a rescue space, we just knew we had to help him. When Hero arrived with us, he was absolutely terrified. It took him a couple of days to begin settling in and feeling a little safer, and it was heartbreaking to see just how scared he was. Sadly, Hero was also in a terribly matted state, and it was clear he had not received the care he needed for quite some time. His coat was so badly matted and sore that it simply would not have been fair to put him through a groom while awake. Once we had started building up some trust with Hero, we arranged a welfare groom at our vets. A huge thank you to the amazing veterinary nurses who took such good care of him and carried out his groom. Thanks to them, Hero is now completely matt-free! We can only imagine how much relief this must bring him. His matting was so severe that it was pulling on his skin and causing him discomfort, so we hope he is now feeling much more comfortable in himself. As Hero has settled in, begun to feel safe and developed a bond with us, we have seen more and more of his cheeky little personality starting to shine through. Honestly, it is just lovely to see! Behind that frightened little face is a sweet boy who, once he knows you and feels comfortable around you, shows just how loving he can be. He is beginning to learn that people can be kind, that he does not need to be so afraid and that life can be full of lovely things. We do not know everything Hero has been through, but we do know that his future should be filled with kindness, comfort and happiness. He deserves a family who will see the beautiful boy he is and give him all the time he needs to blossom. If you think Hero could be the boy for you, please contact us with answers to our adoption questions. We ask potential adopters to provide detailed information about their home, family, lifestyle and experience, along with photos or videos of their downstairs living area and securely enclosed garden for our virtual home check. Two forms of ID are also required. About Hero

What life with Hero looks like

Hero is an extra-large adult chow chow dog waiting at Pennine Pen Animal Rescue CIO in United Kingdom.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hero, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hero?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Pennine Pen Animal Rescue CIO handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hero on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hero if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Pennine Pen Animal Rescue CIO will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Hero already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hero isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Pennine Pen Animal Rescue CIO early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hero and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
