Houdini

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Puppy

Houdini – a young fighter seeks his great fortune. The young Podenco male was found alone and left to fend for himself. Presumably, he was abandoned due to his health condition and ended up at the Perrera. When we first met Houdini there, it was immediately clear that something was wrong with him. But just as quickly, the decision was made: we would help him and not leave him behind. Both front legs show distinct deformities that initially appeared to be old fractures. His paws are crooked, and his tail also has a kink. However, the veterinary examination—including X-rays—yielded a surprising result: Houdini has not a single fracture. Instead, all the abnormalities are growth-related malformations. The growth plates have not developed normally, and the kink in his tail is caused by a malformed vertebra. Veterinarians suspect that the likely cause is severe undernutrition during pregnancy and in the first few weeks of life. Despite his physical peculiarities, Houdini is a cheerful, lively, and charming young dog. He doesn't let his limitations hold him back; he plays joyfully with the other dogs and keeps remarkably well pace with them. Currently, the veterinarians believe that with physiotherapy, a high-quality diet, and appropriate support, Houdini can lead a good and largely normal dog life. At present, he is still growing and already stands about 59 cm tall at the shoulder. Houdini is right in the middle of puberty. He’s spirited, playful, and sometimes a little whirlwind. At the same time, he’s easy to correct and quickly finds his calm again. He especially enjoys cuddle sessions and likes to retreat onto his favorite blanket, from which he observes everything going on around him. He shares his enclosure with our senior ladies Pelusa and Aurelia. The two experienced older dogs have already taught him a lot. From being an initially very exuberant young dog, he has now become a much more balanced companion. Physically, too, his condition has visibly improved since his arrival at the finca. For Houdini, we wish for a loving home in a rural setting or on the outskirts of town. A securely fenced property or the possibility of safe free-roaming should be available. He’d certainly be delighted to have a friendly canine companion, but he could also happily live as an only dog. It’s particularly important to us to find people who are ready to walk this next part of his journey together with him. No one can predict today with certainty how his physical development will unfold in the long term. The prognosis is positive, yet we’re looking for people who will love and support Houdini regardless of any potential future challenges. Houdini didn’t have an easy start in life. Now, all he needs is one thing: people who will show him how wonderful having his own home can be.

About Houdini

What life with Houdini looks like

Houdini is a puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierhilfe Fuerteventura in Dransfeld.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Houdini, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Houdini?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierhilfe Fuerteventura handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Houdini on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Houdini if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierhilfe Fuerteventura will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Houdini already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Houdini isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierhilfe Fuerteventura early rather than rehoming privately; they know Houdini and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
