Hugo

Galgo Español · Male · Senior · 9 years

Name: Hugo Breed: Galgo Espanol Gender: male, neutered Date of birth: approximately 02.08.2015 Shoulder height: approximately 60 cm Location: Refugio des Tierschutzvereines Quinta Dos Caes, Lagoa, Algarve, Portugal Meet Hugo, our wonderful male Galgo with a gentle temperament and an impressive stature of 60 cm at the shoulder. This sighthound is not only a beautiful sight with his brindle coat but also a truly special dog who has endured a turbulent past. Several months ago, Hugo was rescued from the municipal animal shelter in Portugal in a pitiful condition. There, he carried not only physical wounds but also deep emotional scars. A large flesh wound at the site where his tail once was bears witness to the suffering he endured. Maggots had infested the wound, and Hugo was in severe pain. Gisela did not hesitate for a moment and immediately brought this poor soul to her private animal shelter. There, the veterinarian cleaned the wounds and removed the larvae that had burrowed deep into the tissue. It’s unimaginable—without Gisela, this gentle soul would have died in agony. Understandably, he was deeply frightened and needed time to recover; Gisela and her team gave him exactly that, along with plenty of cuddles and loving attention. Today, Hugo is a cheerful fellow who has settled in well with the group. He’s making progress walking on a leash and enjoys spending time in the yard, playing with his fellow animals. His sociable nature is evident: he’s friendly and respectful toward other dogs and has no issues within the pack. Despite his positive development, Hugo still needs patience and understanding from his future humans. He requires time to build trust—a process of great importance to him. We hope to find him a loving home with people who will give him the time he needs. Once that trust is established, Hugo will become a loyal companion for life. Gisela and her companions continue working intensively to improve his leash manners and prepare him as best as possible for his future life as a cherished family dog. If you’re ready to offer a special dog like Hugo a home and provide the love and patience he deserves, he could soon become your faithful friend. Hugo is eagerly waiting for his chance—perhaps with you? Are you, too, moved by the life Hugo has left behind? Please get in touch with his adoption coordinator, Bettina Thoma! Hugo will travel neutered, with an EU pet passport, all necessary vaccinations, tested for Mediterranean diseases, and full of eager anticipation for his new life in Germany.

About Hugo

What life with Hugo looks like

Hugo is a large senior galgo español dog waiting at Tierfreunde Europa e.V. in Simonswald.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hugo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hugo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierfreunde Europa e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hugo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hugo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierfreunde Europa e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hugo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hugo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierfreunde Europa e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hugo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
