Adopt Ikarus

Doberman · Unknown

Ikarus was given up due to being overwhelmed. He likes to test his limits. However, if these boundaries are consistently and confidently shown to him, he can indeed behave quite decently and be receptive. He wants to accompany his primary caregiver everywhere, and this is something that definitely needs work, as nice as it is to take your dog with you everywhere, he also needs to learn to stay alone at times. He is, however, typically very energetic for his breed and still needs to learn to handle some calm. Ikarus forms a strong attachment to his trusted people. Ikarus enjoys going for walks, both in groups and just with his primary caregiver, and is always ready to discover new things. At times, he can appear insecure and hectic during these walks. On walks, he shows interest in his surroundings and can get excited when meeting other dogs. He is not inherently incompatible with other animals; depending on his liking, he may enjoy playing with them in the free run area. However, he does not accept the signals from other animals in a sustainable way and doesn't know when to stop, so he needs help with this. For Ikarus, active people who ideally have experience with Dobermanns would be ideal. They should bring consistency, confidence, plenty of time, and good nerves, and should be willing to continue working on the young male dog's education, preferably with a suitable dog trainer. An ideal home for Ikarus would be a single-story house with a garden. There should not be children in his new home. If there are existing fellow animals, their compatibility would need to be tested. If interested, we look forward to a meaningful email with a contact phone number.

About Ikarus

What life with Ikarus looks like

Ikarus is a adult doberman dog waiting at Tierheim Troisdorf in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ikarus, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ikarus?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Troisdorf handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ikarus on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ikarus if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Troisdorf will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ikarus already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ikarus isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Troisdorf early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ikarus and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
