Il cane in braccio

Puppies and small dogs often end up in the arms of their human companions. The reasons are always the same: "desire" to cuddle them or "desire" to protect them, which in both cases manifest the epimeles, meaning the pleasure of taking care of an being that seems to ask for protection or help. But does this "desire" of the human correspond correctly to the dog's ethogram? It seems not, above all because the being being carried is not part of intraspecific behaviors (except in the earliest weeks when a puppy can be lifted by the mother's mouth) just like a hug, which is a typically human action, not a canine one. Moreover, if it seems that the dog asks to be picked up, it is very likely that it is a habit implemented by the human or even a behavior that could hide a problem in the dog that should be addressed rather than encouraged. In addition, the "desire" to secure the puppy or dog—maybe in a safe area or as another dog approaches—by lifting it from the ground and holding it in your arms can trigger the predatory motivation of the dogs from which you thought you were rescuing it: lifting the dog upwards equates to the escape of what will clearly seem to be prey. And carrying the dog on your arm during a walk? It makes no sense, since it prevents the dog from exploring the environment, gaining information, memorizing scents, identifying dangers, and distinguishing different olfactory traces. Of course, completely different is the action of the dog who decides to sit on your lap when you are sitting: in this case, the dog shows a desire for contact that should be encouraged (not rejected) and fostered (perhaps by sitting on the floor next to him) and that simultaneously allows us to fulfill our "desire" of having him "in our arms" in an ethologically correct way.

Cuccioli e cani di piccola taglia finiscono spesso in braccio ai loro compagni umani. I motivi sono sempre gli stessi: “desiderio” di coccolarlo o “desiderio” di proteggerlo, che in entrambe le fattispecie concretizzano l’epimelesi, ossia il piacere di prendersi cura di un essere che sembra chiedere protezione o aiuto. Ma questo “desiderio” dell’umano si rapporta correttamente all’etogramma del cane? Sembra proprio di no, anzitutto perché l’essere trasportato non fa parte dei comportamenti intraspecifici (se non nelle primissime settimane quando il cucciolo può essere sollevato con la bocca dalla madre) esattamente come l’abbraccio, che è un’azione tipicamente umana e non canina. Se, poi, può sembrare che sia il cane a chiedere di essere preso in braccio è molto probabile che si tratti di un'abitudine implementata dall’umano o, addirittura, di un comportamento che potrebbe nascondere un disagio del cane che andrebbe risolto e non assecondato. Non solo, ma il “desiderio” di mettere in sicurezza il cucciolo o il cane – magari in un'area sgambo o all'approssimarsi di un cane libero – sollevandolo da terra e tenendolo in braccio può attivare la motivazione predatoria dei cani dai quali si pensava di sottrarlo: sollevare il cane verso l’alto equivale, infatti, alla fuga di quella che a tutti gli effetti sembrerà essere una preda. E la passeggiata in braccio all’umano? Non ha alcun senso, dato che impedisce al cane di esplorare l’ambiente, acquisendo informazioni, memorizzando odori, individuando pericoli, riconoscendo e distinguendo le differenti tracce olfattive. Ovviamente, del tutto differente è l’azione del cane che decide di sedersi in braccio quando si è seduti: in questo caso, il cane manifesta un desiderio di contatto che va assecondato (non respingendolo) e favorito (magari sedendosi a terra accanto a lui) e che, contemporaneamente, ci permette di concretizzare nel modo etologicamente corretto il nostro “desiderio” di averlo “in braccio”.
