Iljo

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 3 years

Update 11/2023: The little ones are no longer fearful. Good, they now show a certain amount of caution at times, but are curious enough to check out what the person in their enclosure has to offer. If the person wants to take care of them, play a little, or simply pet them, they are immediately on board! Fear doesn’t have to be, but with a little caution, this young puppy can still make it through life and become a great companion. Who gives them the chance to do so??? History: A good friend and animal rescuer asked us for help. She found a puppy family in a forest near Budeasa, who seemed to have been abandoned, which unfortunately is a common practice here in Romania. There was no mother present, and after waiting for a while, she still didn’t appear. Therefore, the assumption that they were abandoned became more likely. Although we were almost out of space, we couldn’t say no, and so the little ones came to us. The first few days were extremely fearful for them, and they barely came out of their hut in the enclosure. However, after only a few days, they realized that nothing bad was happening to them and they gained trust. Now, they are completely normal, approachable, and very playful puppy children, fully trusting of humans and behaving unobtrusively towards each other. Only Icola is still a little shy and doesn’t like to be caught so easily. Once she is in “custody,” however, she is very cuddly and loving. Now, they all want to move slowly into their own family, how about you???. This is a young, adolescent dog.

About Iljo

What life with Iljo looks like

Iljo is a young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Streunerfreunde e.V. / Streunerhilfe in Aschaffenburg.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Iljo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Iljo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Streunerfreunde e.V. / Streunerhilfe handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Iljo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Iljo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Streunerfreunde e.V. / Streunerhilfe will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Iljo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Iljo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Streunerfreunde e.V. / Streunerhilfe early rather than rehoming privately; they know Iljo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
