Jamila

Rhodesian Ridgeback · Female · Adult · 8 years

Jamila - our African beauty can now show herself to the public and start looking for a home. We had to hope, pray and worry for 7 months - whether she would be released or how fate would play out. Jamila is one of 67 dogs rescued from a seizure in November, at that time she was closer to death than she would be now and almost no one would have found her. What we only knew from Harry Potter became a cruel reality for her. Locked in a wardrobe, without food or water - among dirt, garbage and feces she already saw her life passing by. It was the so-called rescue at the last minute. But such a rescue is not always easy, the body has taken its toll, her psyche and trust in humans completely shaken. Today, however, she shines! She lives, she loves and her heart laughs! The lion hunter has shown everyone here what fighting means and wants to enjoy her life to the fullest now. However, it is important to note the following: Jamila does not like all people - and not everyone at once, she is suspicious and insecure, wants to avoid closeness and conflicts and therefore always needs a little support from her caregivers. Similarly, small and especially disrespectful dogs are a thorn in her side, which she can do without. But after acclimatization, she is still a social and communicative female dog. We would not recommend Jamila to small children, children from 8 years old who already have a good understanding of living with dogs are quite possible. Due to her previous upbringing and our limited possibilities, we have not yet been able to break all her bad habits. She is now house-trained, her basic obedience is in place - as long as you demand it, leaving alone - no problem! Traveling the most beautiful places in the car - also very much liked! But unfortunately, a big "quirk" remains - eating everything you find! It doesn't matter to her whether it's edible or needs to be removed by a veterinarian. Therefore, special attention must be paid to order in the household ???? Our sensitive one deserves another life with a lot of love, attention and good employment.

Doch leider bleibt eine große „Macke“ – alles fressen was man findet!

About Jamila

What life with Jamila looks like

Jamila is a large adult rhodesian ridgeback dog waiting at Tierheim Burgdorf in Burgdorf.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Jamila, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Jamila?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Burgdorf handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Jamila on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Jamila if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Burgdorf will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Jamila already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Jamila isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Burgdorf early rather than rehoming privately; they know Jamila and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
