Jan

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Puppy · 9 months

"Large baby with a golden heart is looking for a new area of influence with a humorous family," this is how Jan would probably start a newspaper ad, well, if he knew how to use a computer or a pen. Jan has many wonderful talents, but unfortunately, he can't do that, so I'll take over and promote the funny giant. Jan is truly not small in size with his 75cm shoulder height, but he himself thinks he's a perfect lap dog - but many of our guard dogs think that way. The cute (and despite his size, he is extremely cute) heartbreaker has already caused many great laughs, because his unusual hairstyle invites you to play the game "he looks like..." freely. Who do you think of first when you see our clown? Jan was alone in a park where also a volunteer from Arca likes to walk. The cheerful and affectionate, about 9 month old charm made immediately to follow the young lady - and she couldn't resist the magic of Jan and informed Arca about her new friend. Jan moved not only into the animal shelter but also into the hearts of our partners a month ago. The big cuddly bear is a sociable and affectionate buddy who knows exactly how to calm stressed people a bit. He begs devotedly for cuddles, cookies, kind words and pays back with loving kisses, radiant smiles and small tricks he has learned on his own, which he knows increase his cuteness factor several times. Jan is looking for a humorous family that is aware of the responsibility one takes on when taking in a guard dog in its teenage years. Jan is really an XXL snuggle pillow and not stubborn for a dog of his breed, but he has strength and is used to taking care of himself from his life on the street. A dog like Jan needs a team player by his side who knows and respects that you can't train a guard dog, but only win the golden heart of the gentle giant and trust that the dog will function just as well, but differently than, for example, a herding dog, out of respect and love. Jan is a gold treasure, for whom we wish he quickly finds people he can fully connect with. He needs friends who show him how life at home (and on the couch - we're talking about a guard dog, it's only theoretically avoidable) works, how to enchant the neighborhood and beg for so many cookies that you can safely leave the kitchen bin unattended. Do you have enough humor, strength and perseverance for our wonderful solo performer?

DE·Show original

About Jan

What life with Jan looks like

Jan is a small puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Jan, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Jan?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Jan on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Jan if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Jan already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Jan isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Jan and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
