Jelonek

Male · Young · 2 years

Due to the ongoing proceedings, we are looking for a foster home for him with priority given to adoption. Jelonek arrived at the shelter following an intervention at his former dog caregiver’s residence. He came to us along with his large canine family. The dogs had been living in very poor conditions—on a small space with no opportunity to satisfy their natural canine needs such as walks, sniffing, and play. Jelonek is a very gentle, sensitive, and fearful dog; yet he also has a terrier-type personality, which means he’s highly curious about the world—curiosity that sometimes overcomes his fear. He displays determination in his decisions and carries a terrier-like wildness deep inside. This dog needs plenty of time to trust someone new; he treats people with great reserve, fear, and distance. At the shelter, Jelonek has learned to wear a collar, put on a harness, and walk on a leash. He enjoys walking in quiet places, but street traffic currently paralyzes him and triggers an urge to flee. Żelik—his volunteer caregiver also calls him that—is very fond of other dogs and is extremely sociable, both toward females and males. We believe he could live in a household where there’s already a resident dog, of course after appropriate introductions. For Jelonek, we’re looking for a home: – in a quiet neighborhood free from many urban stimuli—Jelonek wouldn’t feel comfortable in an urban environment at this time; – with balanced, warm, and calm people; – without children; – ideally with one or more existing dogs.

Chętnie spaceruje w spokojnych miejscach, jednak ruch uliczny go na razie paraliżuje i powoduje chęć ucieczki.

About Jelonek

What life with Jelonek looks like

Jelonek is a medium-sized young adult dog waiting at Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Poznaniu in Poznan.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Jelonek, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Jelonek?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Poznaniu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Jelonek on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Jelonek if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Poznaniu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Jelonek already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Jelonek isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Poznaniu early rather than rehoming privately; they know Jelonek and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
