Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 11 years

JOE (SKA) – Senior – Long-term resident - UPDATE 09/2023 JOE (SKA) – Senior – Long-term resident - male dog, neutered, born ca. 2014, shoulder height ca. 45 cm, in TH Skaryszew since 11.03.2015 Joe has been waiting in the animal shelter for quite some time now, without getting a chance. He is a very open and friendly male dog who likes people. Joe is house-trained – but he needs to go out for a walk at least twice, which should be a given. During walks, he is very alert – at home, he can live without fellow animals and should occupy his space without a dog companion. (TH 04/2022) UPDATE 06/2023: There are new developments and pictures! Joe now gets along with every other dog, has no problems anymore – not even with new dogs. Paweł, our employee, the dog whisperer, works specifically with long-term dogs who have never seen a leash – he does a great job. Joe has also started walking on the leash, we are overjoyed! We wish so much that Joe gets a chance. (TH Skaryszew 06/2023) UPDATE 09/2023: Eight years is a long time. A long time in a human's life...in a dog's life, it's almost a WHOLE life. At a few months old, Joe came to the animal shelter and has been waiting for a chance since then. For people who can show him the way to a life and want to. Time is still on his side...and Joe shows us simply as a treasure, absolutely friendly and people-oriented...and he is so happy about cuddles and attention. We can touch him everywhere and even look at his teeth – which do not look good. Joe probably practiced walking on the leash – but there is still a lot of room for improvement. He can't do it yet, but he would love to learn. Joe has not given up in his long time at the shelter and we want to make him visible again. With new beautiful pictures...and with a big request: May the waiting end. May he GET HIS chance and show with the right support what a great dog he is. (Currently, Joe shares the run with a dominant, strong-willed female dog) A./B.

About JOE

What life with JOE looks like

JOE is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Hundehilfe Polen in Dierkshausen.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting JOE, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about JOE?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hundehilfe Polen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw JOE on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt JOE if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hundehilfe Polen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is JOE already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if JOE isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hundehilfe Polen early rather than rehoming privately; they know JOE and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
