Josie

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 8 years

Josie was placed with us eight years ago as a puppy and unfortunately had to return due to changes in her family's circumstances. Now she is looking for people who want to give her a permanent home. Josie is an independent dog with her own mind. You have to earn her attention - but once you have gained her trust, a reliable bond develops. She doesn't automatically orientate herself towards humans and seems not to have learned how to rely on her caregiver in difficult situations so far. Therefore the pretty dog is looking for people who can provide her with security, calmness, clarity and consistency. In everyday life Josie already walks well on a leash. However, she tends to bark at other dogs during encounters and still needs confident guidance here. She also benefits from people who act calmly and confidently in unfamiliar or stressful situations, for example when visiting the vet. She is house trained, can stay alone for hours and drives well by car as well as bus and train. In addition to her independent nature Josie has a wonderfully funny side. When running free she dashes full of joy over the meadow, plays wildly around and shows how much joie de vivre is in her. With a cookie she can often be quickly convinced - treats are definitely the way to her heart. For Josie we wish for a home with people who enjoy working with a strong-willed dog and giving her the necessary orientation in everyday life. We could well imagine motivated newcomers to dogs if there is willingness. However, small children should not live in the household.Anyone looking for a clever, humorous dog with personality and willing to earn her trust will find a very special companion in Josie.

About Josie

What life with Josie looks like

Josie is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Bonn in Bonn.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Josie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Josie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Bonn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Josie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Josie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Bonn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Josie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Josie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Bonn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Josie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
