Sheriff

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

Sheriff arrived with us in 2022 and initially made a completely normal impression. But he’s already been through quite a lot. We at least know part of his story. Originally, he probably came from the streets—already a tough enough situation in itself. Then he was rescued along with several other dogs from Bucha in Ukraine, a place that has sadly become notorious for the massacres and destruction there. For a long time, everyone—the animal protector, her family, and the animals—lived in anxious anticipation. With small children and around 30 animals, they couldn’t initially leave the city, whose bridges had by then been blown up. And without the animals, they simply wouldn’t have left. It wasn’t until the situation had calmed down again that everyone was finally able to set off. They’ve all been living in Lower Saxony for some time now. There, they underwent quarantine, had blood tests, and received all the care these animals need. Everything is fine, and Sheriff is in good shape! Now he’s ready for a new life. In Ukraine, he lived together with the children in the family. Unfortunately, here in Germany, Sheriff hasn’t developed quite as well. He occasionally snaps, and we still haven’t quite figured out when or why. But can you really blame him, given everything he’s been through? His sponsor is his primary caregiver and gets along wonderfully with him. She can do anything with him. We’re looking for an individual or a couple with dog experience who’d like to get to know him slowly and carefully. He deserves finally to find a lovely, peaceful home where he can settle in comfortably.

About Sheriff

What life with Sheriff looks like

Sheriff is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Iserlohn in Iserlohn.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sheriff, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sheriff?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Iserlohn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sheriff on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sheriff if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Iserlohn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sheriff already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sheriff isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Iserlohn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sheriff and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
