He is as happy as a snow king when he gets to go out, and he behaves like a typical German Shepherd once he is in his area. Due to his size, he is naturally very strong and can pull quite hard. On the other hand, he is generally manageable. One should keep a sufficient distance from other dogs, especially at the beginning. Despite his bulk, he moves fluidly and willingly. He is currently on a diet, but it will take some time for him to really slim down, although it should be noted that he has a sturdy build. Whoever takes on Kailo might not get the youngest dog, but they (or she) will need to work to keep up with Kailo. We hope very much that this dear fellow will find a new home soon. Today we met the 8-year-old German Shepherd male dog Kailo. Kailo lived in a company as a guard dog. When the company was forcibly liquidated, Kailo was left behind. Through this, he came to his current owner, who took him in under the condition that he be compatible with her cats. Unfortunately, it turned out that he cannot get along with cats at all. And as life would have it... no one wanted to take Kailo back. The situation has become very stressful, with the cats and the dog needing to be separated 24 hours a day, which is always a balancing act. There have been close calls where Kailo nearly caught the older tomcat. Outside, during walks, he uses all his strength when he sees cats, which has led multiple times to his owner falling. This is not only unpleasant but also poses a risk of damaging her new knee prostheses. In short, things cannot continue like this, and Kailo urgently needs a new home. He is friendly towards people, can stay alone in the house for a few hours without causing any damage, and travels well in a car. Leash handling still needs to be practiced.

About Kailo

What life with Kailo looks like

Kailo is a adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Weil am Rhein e.V. in Weil am Rhein.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kailo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kailo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Weil am Rhein e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kailo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kailo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Weil am Rhein e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kailo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kailo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Weil am Rhein e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kailo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
