Kala

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 1 year

KalaFemale dog, medium in size at around 15kg. Born April 2025. Cheerful and active dog who is looking for a home without young children and who will allow her to blossom. Would benefit from living with another dog. Meet KalaKala’s life could have ended before it had really begun. She was found during the night, wandering dangerously close to the busy highway between Belgrade and Niš with her mother and sister. Their exhausted mum was trying to keep her two tiny puppies safe, but they were covered in fleas and parasites and far too young even to eat by themselves. It is a miracle that all three survived that night. She is a cheerful, curious youngster who is still very puppy-like. Once she feels safe with someone, Kala is affectionate, gentle and loving. However, unfamiliar people can make her anxious and she may bark and retreat until she has had time to become comfortable. Kala tends to feel more at ease with women and may take a little longer to build trust with men. She is also frightened of young children and tries to get away if they approach her, so she would be best suited to a calm home without small children. Kala is wonderful with other dogs and would really benefit from living with a friendly, confident dog who could help her feel secure and show her that the world is not such a frightening place. Although she does not react to cats she sees outside, she has not yet been properly tested with cats in a home environment. Kala is an active girl who will need further help with her lead walking. With patience, encouragement and time to blossom, we believe she could become a wonderful companion for walks, hikes, adventures and active holidays. Her perfect family will understand that trust cannot be rushed. They will allow Kala to settle at her own pace and gently help her gain confidence. In return, they will have the privilege of watching this shy girl discover that the world can be safe and earning the love and loyalty of a truly gentle soul. You may notice that Kala has two small white bandages on her hind legs in some of her photos and videos. These are simply from having her rear dewclaws removed. Kala is spayed, vaccinated, and negative on tests. Our dogs are tested for the following conditions as part of our standard testing procedure - Heartworm, Anaplasmosis, Lyme Disease, Ehrlichiosis and Brucellosis (Since 11th June 2021). About Kala

What life with Kala looks like

Kala is a medium-sized young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Balkan Underdogs in Tirana.

A young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇦🇱Adopting from Albania

The shelter typically completes the animal's vaccinations, microchipping, and pet passport before adoption. Specific fees and process details vary by shelter and country — confirm directly via the contact details in the sidebar.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kala, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kala?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Balkan Underdogs handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kala on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kala if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Balkan Underdogs will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Kala already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kala isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Balkan Underdogs early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kala and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
