Adopt Kamiel

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 2 years

Kamiel was found abandoned with his siblings Pipa and Torx when he was 2–3 months old, right in the middle of a field. He was adopted in Spain but did not fit into the new home and was returned to Melampo because he was too energetic. Back at the Melampo camp, Kamiel has shown good behavior so far – also in interactions with his fellow animals. We have discovered that he is a great dog: active, energetic, playful – and he loves splashing in the water. He plays and interacts happily with other dogs. He also loves his toys very much. However, if too much excitement, rivalry, or excitement comes into play, it can happen that he reacts angrily – although this is not the norm. In everyday life, he runs and plays daily with other dogs and toys – usually completely problem-free. Only in certain moments does it become necessary to correct him. It is a bit difficult for him to trust people, especially if they are rough with him or force him to do something – then he gets scared and behaves distantly and independently. We do not know how or with which methods he was raised. However, with calmness and patience, he quickly gains trust – then he enjoys cuddles and shows himself to be clingy and grateful. Therefore, we assume that he will be well trained with loving and clear methods. When he goes for walks with other dogs outside the camp, he does very well. He simply wants to be happy, play, run, and trust that no one will do him any harm. It was said that at 9 months old, he showed a mild lameness and was operated on at the right elbow (mild elbow dysplasia) – with very good results. Currently, he shows no problems. The Mediterranean diseases were tested negative for him. For the active Kamiel, we are looking for dog-experienced people who can recognize when something is too much for him and can safely accompany him in such moments. A loving approach as well as positive, non-violent training methods are of central importance for Kamiel. Dear Kamiel, we wish you to find calm, loving people who take the time to earn your trust. Here’s how to apply.

About Kamiel

What life with Kamiel looks like

Kamiel is a young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Melampo in Melampo.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kamiel, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kamiel?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Melampo handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kamiel on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kamiel if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Melampo will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kamiel already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kamiel isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Melampo early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kamiel and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
