Kaninchen Gustav

Male · Baby

Our gentle giant Gustav arrived with us at the animal shelter on 24.02.2026 through a confiscation. His previous life was far from pleasant: he had to live in tiny boxes and as a result, he still shows stereotypical behaviors daily. Despite this background, Gustav is an incredibly affectionate and people-oriented bunny who greatly enjoys the company of his humans. Due to a lack of care and neglect in his former home, Gustav suffers from joint problems. This makes it difficult for him to groom himself, so he occasionally needs assistance. Regular brushing and sometimes a bath help him feel more comfortable. Gustav is a true senior and wishes for a quiet home with a compatible partner who shares his daily routines. He gets along very well with male rabbits too. With his friendly and balanced nature, he makes a wonderful companion and a loyal friend to every bunny who gets to know him. Particularly charming: Gustav actually runs to you when you call him – almost like a little dog. As a senior, Gustav will continue to bring with him smaller or larger health issues in the future. His future humans should therefore be prepared to give this special bunny the attention and support it needs. Currently, he does not receive any medications but only plant-based supplements to support his well-being. If you would like to meet Gustav or have further questions, we would be happy to discuss everything further over the phone. Please contact us with photos and measurements of his enclosure plus the corresponding phone number.

About Kaninchen Gustav

What life with Kaninchen Gustav looks like

Kaninchen Gustav is a extra-large puppy/kitten rabbit waiting at Tierheim Elmshorn in Elmshorn.

Rabbits are social animals — most shelters recommend adopting them in bonded pairs rather than alone. They need fresh hay daily, several hours of out-of-cage time, and rabbit-safe spaces to explore. They live eight to twelve years, longer than many people expect.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kaninchen Gustav, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kaninchen Gustav?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Elmshorn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kaninchen Gustav on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kaninchen Gustav if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Elmshorn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kaninchen Gustav already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most rabbits on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kaninchen Gustav isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Elmshorn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kaninchen Gustav and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
