Adopt Käpt'n Jacky

European Shorthair · Male · Senior · 15 years

Jacky came to us via the animal welfare association from the neighboring city. The association, which doesn't have its own animal shelter, was looking for a place for him because he needed "special care" after inpatient veterinary treatment. Here is this old, one-eyed red tomcat, who looks like he's fought more battles than any pirate on the high seas! With his scars, he seems like the sea rover among cats—a true veteran of life's oceans. He likely lost his eye in a fierce fight with a nasty rat pirate or in a heated duel with another tomcat. "Käpt'n Jacky" is hard of hearing and has chronic cat flu, with only a few teeth left. An open cleft palate makes his life even more difficult. Whether this was congenital or due to an accident, we will never know. Because of this cleft palate, food sometimes gets into his nasal cavity, and he snorts mucus and food particles across the room. This makes him quite high-maintenance and unlikely to find a home again. He lives in our so-called "Handicap-WG" along with the cats Luna and Bella and enjoys sitting in his high perch in the outdoor enclosure, observing everything (he can't hear anymore ;-)). This tomcat is like a loyal pirate who only wants one thing: to be protected and feel loved. He purrs and rumbles and constantly seeks human closeness, wanting to be loved, cared for, and to find peace from life's storms. And when you give him a little attention, he shows with his grateful look that he is the bravest, most lovable pirate on four paws! Since this truly charming tomcat will need a lot of money for future veterinary visits and medications due to his medical history, we are looking for animal sponsors to support him financially. This way, we can ensure that he receives the necessary care and can have the best possible life. If you feel moved and want to give this brave sea bear a bit of support, that would be simply wonderful. Together, we can give him the love and care he so deserves. Jacky loves to doze in the sun.

About Käpt'n Jacky

What life with Käpt'n Jacky looks like

Käpt'n Jacky is a large senior european shorthair cat waiting at Tierschutzhof Ering in Germany.

Senior cats are the gentlest house guests: predictable, mostly silent, and grateful for a sunny windowsill. Older cats often have minor dental or kidney issues — keep an eye on water intake and weight. Many sleep eighteen hours a day and want no part of any drama.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Käpt'n Jacky, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Käpt'n Jacky?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzhof Ering handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Käpt'n Jacky on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Käpt'n Jacky if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzhof Ering will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Käpt'n Jacky already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Käpt'n Jacky isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzhof Ering early rather than rehoming privately; they know Käpt'n Jacky and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
