Kika

Podenco · Female · Adult · 4 years

Kika has been at the shelter for some time. She was found on a campo and is quite scared. Kika went to a house on trial but was returned after two weeks because she was afraid and didn't dare to go inside. The man of the couple had no patience for that so she had to return. Since then, Kika has been back at the shelter where she feels comfortable with the small dogs. She doesn't like it around the big dogs and galgos and prefers to stay in the kennel. They go out twice a day on the field which Kika enjoys. She likes to come for a piece of sausage or a biscuit from volunteers she knows. But as soon as you try to pet her, she runs away. It's a damaged dog. There is work being done with her but there isn't always time at the shelter to help all the scared dogs much. In a house with people who have experience and a lot of patience and where another social dog is in the house, Kika would improve. But it's a slow process and Kika herself indicates what her progress is. She now allows a harness to be put on in the kennel and she walks on a leash within the shelter. She hasn't been outside the shelter on a leash yet.

About Kika

What life with Kika looks like

Kika is a medium-sized adult podenco dog waiting at description in AL Ridderkerk.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kika, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kika?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. description handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kika on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kika if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — description will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kika already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kika isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with description early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kika and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
