Kira

Chihuahua · Female · Senior · 8 years

Chihuahua female Kira—small, brave, and with a truly big personality. Our little Chihuahua lady recently exchanged the Spanish animal shelter for a loving foster home in Germany. There, she can finally find some peace, recover from the hardships of the past months, and slowly start to regain her trust in people. She’s even gained a few grams already—and it really suits her! As is typical for a Chihuahua, this little lady knows exactly what she wants. She thoroughly enjoys cuddles from her trusted humans, but she doesn’t want just anyone to pick her up or bother her. At first, she approaches strangers with a healthy dose of skepticism, and visitors are always announced loudly—following the motto: “Safety comes first.” Even when meeting other dogs on the leash, she still shows that she carries a bit of her past baggage with her. For now, aggression often seems to be her best form of defense. However, with loving, consistent guidance and a bit of training, she’ll surely learn that not every dog of her own species poses a threat. At home, she reveals her incredibly cuddly side, cherishes the closeness of her people, and forms a strong bond with them. At the same time, though, she tends to defend her primary caregiver. If she’s sitting on your lap or feels especially secure, she won’t share that spot with strangers. Again, patience, understanding, and clear leadership will help you work through this. We’re looking for people who understand that a Chihuahua isn’t just an accessory—it’s a real dog with character, needs, and feelings. A rescue dog brings her story along with her—sometimes a small one, sometimes a slightly bigger burden. Anyone willing to give her time, love, security, and the necessary patience will be rewarded with a loyal, playful, and incredibly affectionate companion. If you’d like to show this little personality how wonderful a protected dog life can be, she’d love to meet you. Please feel free to contact her assigned adoption counselor. Please keep in mind that the Chihuahua is considered a breed bred for extreme traits. Right now, Kira is doing well, but no one can guarantee that this will stay that way. You can find more information on this topic on our information page. Here’s the link to Kira’s video.

About Kira

What life with Kira looks like

Kira is a large senior chihuahua dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kira, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kira?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kira on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kira if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kira already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kira isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kira and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
