Kona

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 4 years

Kona is looking for people who can show her that the world can also be beautiful. Kona is about five years old and has been waiting in Romania for her chance. Not at a shelter, but for years with a private animal rescuer who saved her once and has given her a safe home since then. But sometimes love means letting go. Kona is young, playful and full of life. She wants to run, play and discover the world. The dogs she used to play with have grown old. Her best dog friend suffers from arthritis and can no longer keep up with her. With a heavy heart, her foster mom has therefore decided to look for a family for Kona who will finally give her the life she deserves. Kona has unfortunately had to experience how cruel people can be. Men have driven her away with stones and a neighbor threw a firework near her. These experiences have left their mark. That's why she is initially cautious, especially towards men, and needs time to trust them. Despite everything, Kona hasn't closed her heart. She wants to be with her people, loves the security of the house and seeks closeness when she realizes that nobody means her any harm. At home, she is calm and gets along well with other dogs as well as cats. Once she has gained trust, she shows her cheerful, loving and playful side. Kona already walks well on a leash. Unfortunately, walks are hardly possible where she lives because free-roaming sheepdogs pose a great danger. In the summer, she therefore spends her time in a safe enclosure where she can run and play. In winter, she lives with inside the house. We wish Kona patient people who do not expect miracles in the first days. People who give her time to arrive, build trust and get to know the world at their own pace. A confident first dog could be a great help to her, but it is not a must. Due to her experiences, we wish Kona a quiet home without small children, where you understand her uncertainty and give her the time she needs. We can't take away her past from her. But together we can make sure that her future is finally shaped by love, security and safety. Who will give Kona the chance to finally arrive? Maybe initially on a foster placement - or even forever? Kona has been vaccinated, chipped, spayed/neutered and can travel to her new home after a positive pre-check and with a protection contract. Please share Kona - somewhere out there is maybe just the person who will show her that she never has to be afraid again. ❤️

About Kona

What life with Kona looks like

Kona is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Förderverein Tiernothilfe Siebenbürgen e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kona, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kona?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Förderverein Tiernothilfe Siebenbürgen e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kona on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kona if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Förderverein Tiernothilfe Siebenbürgen e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kona already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kona isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Förderverein Tiernothilfe Siebenbürgen e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kona and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
