Leni

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 7 years

Leni (born 12/2018) arrived at her foster home in Hamburg at the end of August 2026. Since then she has made progress that delights us anew every day. The female dog who at first would not let anyone touch her and snapped out of fear has become a curious little whirlwind who enjoys cuddles from "her" people. She approaches unfamiliar people cautiously, especially when a treat is on offer. What Leni has already learned: In a short time, Leni has completed an impressive program: obstacles at the adoption night, forest adventures, city walks, office life, train and car travel, and short periods of being left alone. She is house-trained, enjoys learning, and is highly motivated by treats. "Sit" and "down" already work when there is a treat in hand. She is currently practicing staying on her blanket, which she does really well. On the leash and outdoors: On the leash, Leni sometimes walks very nicely and sometimes surges ahead. She is increasingly orienting herself to her person, and treats make training here effective. She always greets other dogs outdoors in a friendly way. However, she still needs to learn that she may not approach every dog. This is still difficult for her. A prey drive is evident. Any garden should therefore be very securely fenced. Leni with other dogs in the home: At home, Leni would most like to be the only female dog or needs time to get used to a fellow dog. She does not adapt well to a hierarchy and provokes when the other dog does not do so either. At her foster home she lives together with one female dog and gets along with her, but living together must be well managed for it to work. With patience and human supervision, living together is therefore possible. Her character: Leni is intelligent, strong-willed, and curious. Despite all her progress, she is sometimes still overcome by insecurities, and her protective behavior then briefly flashes through. Given everything she has experienced, this is completely understandable. Behind it is a loving, clever female dog who shows how much is within her. What we wish for Leni: We are looking for active people who meet Leni with loving consistency, clear rules, and structure, and who enjoy training together. Patience and empathy are important so that she can continue to settle in at her own pace. Anyone who already has a dog should know that settling in takes time and must be accompanied at the start. Children in the household are possible but should ideally be calm and trained in handling dogs, as Leni copes well with this. Leni has already shown how much is within her. Now she wishes for a home where she can truly arrive, with people who will grow with her and accompany her on her journey. Leni is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and will be placed with a protection contract after a positive preliminary check. Wearing a safety harness (3-strap) is required when collecting the dog. Such a harness can be purchased for only €25.

Leni (geb.

About Leni

What life with Leni looks like

Leni is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Vierbeiner in Not e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Leni, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Leni?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Vierbeiner in Not e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Leni on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Leni if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Vierbeiner in Not e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Leni already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Leni isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Vierbeiner in Not e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Leni and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
