Lily

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 7 years

Our sweet girl Lily is approx 7 years old and spent over 4 years of her life in a public shelter in Romania. These shelters are extremely overcrowded, noisy, unsafe and the workers are not kind to the dogs. Can you imagine spending over half of your short life in such a horrific enviroment? Now that we've got to know Lily, and her gentle temperament, our heart breaks her for even more, knowing that she was overlooked and not cared about for such a long time :( Lily can be very shy and submissive when she first meets you, with men in particular we have seen her hide away into bushes trying to make herself as small as possible to minimise her risk of being hurt. She is slowly starting to learn that she is safe and loved with us at Oakwood and warms up to females particularly quickly, with males she's just going to take a little longer to trust, after everything she has been through in her life, this is completely understandable, they will just need to show kindess and patience and we're sure she'll get there in no time. Lily will happily be in the presence of other dogs and shows no reactivity however, in her own space, she will guard food and other items from dogs such as the sofa. She has never shown any guarding traits towards humans, only dogs and we need to understand that this is likely the only way that she survived over 4 years in a Romanian shelter. Lily is new into the rescue and so we've not cat tested her as of yet. Lily shows to have low / moderate energy levels. She's currently quite overweight and so believe she'll feel much better when she loses a few kg's and her energy levels should increase Lily seems to be a very chilled out girl however, she has never lived in a home before nor has she ever been completely alone so any time alone in the home is going to need to be slowly built up over time Whilst Lily is still settling in, we've not yet attempted walking her, she's still getting to know us and her new environment Lily has no form of basic training although she is clean in her kennel and she does give her paw a lot without being asked

About Lily

What life with Lily looks like

Lily is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Oakwood Dog Rescue in Kingston upon Hull.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lily, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lily?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Oakwood Dog Rescue handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lily on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lily if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Oakwood Dog Rescue will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lily already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lily isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Oakwood Dog Rescue early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lily and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
