Our friends at Dolmen Animal are currently experiencing a cuteness overload on all 24 paws! But as lovely and adorable as that is, the real reason our partners are still wearing smiles despite the hunting season soon coming to an end, despite kennels being full, and despite the fact that hunting dogs still remain outside the scope of Spain’s new animal protection law, is that this delightful sextet—including their mother—is now safely in their care. For many months, Isabelita was the little darling of animal welfare activists. This exceptionally clever dog was cared for by local residents in a small village for a long time. She repeatedly became pregnant, yet her puppies always either died or were stolen—no one ever managed to capture this cautious and nimble mixed-breed lady. Only Nube, one of her daughters, had been rescued from a previous litter. Isabelita outsmarted live traps, left food untouched, and always knew exactly when someone tried to catch her. Then, in December 2025, the villagers called to say that Isabelita was pregnant again—and on December 12th, six brand-new earthlings arrived into the world. What no one dared to hope for finally came true this time. While Isabelita was out foraging for food, the animal welfare team moved the puppies to a warm, dry, and above all, lockable location. Isabelita did indeed return to her babies, and the entire family could be secured. VID—very important dogs—are allowed to move directly to the management level, which is why Isabelita and her babies are now under the care of the shelter’s director. They’re growing up in a safe and loving environment, getting to know people, occasionally welcoming volunteers into their home so Isabelita can have a bit of peace and quiet, receiving top-quality food, and being raised by their fantastic mom into confident little world conquerors. Isabelita herself is quite the quirky mix, truly encompassing the entire spectrum of imaginable dog breeds. Podenco, Bodeguero, Mastin Espanol, Pointer, maybe a Vorsteher—or perhaps even a Breton—all these hunting breeds, livestock guardian dogs, running marvels, terriers... you name it—come together in her gene pool. And her current brood displays every possible shade and variation too. So here we have six surprise eggs, each with its own unique color and shape, some with long tails, others with short ones (in certain hunting breeds and the Mastin, short tails are often innate), ears that are still very undecided, and the vague prophecy that they’ll eventually grow to “medium size”—that is, larger than a dachshund but smaller than a Saint Bernard—with a likely final weight somewhere between 20 and 30 kilograms. Right now, our six sandbox rockers stand about 30 centimeters tall and weigh 5 kilograms (as of early February 2026). LUCERO looks very much like his mom, Isabelita—and he seems to have inherited her incredibly smart head. He’s the thinker (and also the PRE-thinker) of the litter; he always has an idea for a new game, he always has a plan when his mom scolds him and he doesn’t want to listen. Lucero has more than earned his name as the “brightest star.” Lucero is looking for a family that enjoys having fun and wants to support him in his exploratory endeavors. He’d certainly also be well-suited for tracking work or any carefully chosen canine sport. However, let us reiterate here that Lucero does carry livestock guardian dog genes. If these traits become apparent in adulthood, he’ll still love working and making smart decisions—but anything involving formal training might then become rather challenging. Please only consider adopting a livestock guardian dog mix if you understand that this “stubbornness” isn’t about stupidity or defiance, but rather about the breed’s inherent need to make their own decisions and independently assess risks. If you’re open to an incredibly intelligent (and stunningly beautiful) package of surprises, if you bring plenty of humor, patience, and time, if you know that a puppy won’t stay a puppy forever and that a demanding teenage phase lurks within that little fur ball, ready to turn life into their personal adventure playground, and if you’re willing to commit for many years to being your best friend through thick and thin—then we’d be overjoyed to hear from you soon about Lucero.

Was niemand zu hoffen wagte, gelang diesmal.

About Lucero

What life with Lucero looks like

Lucero is a small puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lucero, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lucero?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lucero on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lucero if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lucero already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lucero isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lucero and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
