Adopt Luna

Mixed Breed · Unknown

Sometimes our responsibility is offering a last act of kindness. Saving an animal from a miserable future even though we cannot heal them. Bringing them to us just to let them leave this world with dignity and pain free. Sadly this is the case with Luna. This poor donkey has had what the vet assumed was an accident some years ago and was left without treatment, left to "heal" in this way. Her entire foot is upside down. When we saw her we had to save her, we had a little hope that maybe, just maybe it was not as bad as it looked. But in our hearts we knew that it was unlikely and x-rays confirmed this. The damage is so far gone it would be impossible to fix with the resources on this island and it is extremely painful. Luna struggled to stand and is always seen laying down, her body is sick, she barely eats, the pain stops her from gaining weight, her eyes are sunken and she doesn't interact. She is a shell of the donkey she would have once been. Our only option to end her suffering is to send her over the rainbow bridge experiencing a little compassion, a name, love and caring at the end. It may not be a nice decision. But we know it is the right one. Luna is a "fancy breed" and was kept to breed from. Adding stress and weight to her already broken body. Used as a breeding machine. Maybe we can not save her fully. But we know that somehow we still saved her. Not only is this a painfully sad experience, we have a bill of around €700 to make it happen. (Buying her, transport, vet bills, x-ray, the passing and body collection) this is the price of a dignified ending. If you can spare a couple of euros we would appreciate this and it allows us to continue offering the last act of kindness when needed. We can imagine you might want to know more about our point of view on animal euthanasia. You can find more information about it here.

About Luna

What life with Luna looks like

Luna is a small adult mixed breed horse waiting at Tenerife Animal Sanctuary in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Adopting a horse is a long-term commitment that almost always requires either land or a boarding stable. The shelter will discuss the horse's training level, vet history, and what kind of work or companionship they're suited for. Expect ongoing costs: feed, farrier, vet, and stabling.

🇪🇸Adopting from Spain

Spanish protectoras generally include sterilization, all vaccinations, microchip ID, and EU pet passport in the adoption fee (typically €250–€400 for a dog, €100–€180 for a cat). Many maintain partnerships with rescue transport providers across the EU.

Frequently asked

Adopting Luna, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Luna?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tenerife Animal Sanctuary handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Luna on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Luna if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tenerife Animal Sanctuary will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Luna already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most horses on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Luna isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tenerife Animal Sanctuary early rather than rehoming privately; they know Luna and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (ES). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
