Mai

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 5 years

Also, anyone who is not infatuated by the sight of our little Mai should urgently speak to a good therapist – this little super-cute coal-black puppy with the charming white bib can force entire groups of experienced animal protectors to exclaim "Oh, how cute!" with a single glance. In November, our partners in Andalusia received a call that two small dogs had been wandering around a suburb of Linares for days, begging for food and affection. The nights this year were already cold early in the south, so our friends quickly got into their car to take the strays under their care. As expected, there was no wild chase, but only a small contact via biscuit and a pat until the two strays were in the car. Mai has been living in the animal shelter for several weeks now and has found many friends there among both two- and four-legged animals. During the Mediterranean check, Mai tested positive for Ehrlichiosis, but a so young dog (our Mai is only one year old, having been born in December 2021) who tested symptom-free has the best chances that the illness will have no consequences and will be permanently defeated with ongoing treatment. Mai is a really sweet girl, calm and balanced and very attached to people. Her big round eyes always seek eye contact kindly, and she listens attentively when you "talk" to her. This little treat is a real talent when it comes to cuddling and snuggling, and she enjoys curling up on the lap of a beloved person into a little snuggling ball and falling asleep feeling safe and with a contented snore. Right now, Mai doesn't seem to be very interested in playing, but she probably just lacks experience here. Being young, we can easily imagine that the cheerful female dog might still discover the fun of balls and ropes, chew toys, and squeaky chickens. Mai is looking for a loving home where she can always find someone who she can cheerfully stick to the feet and observe everything happening in the house and around it. She wishes for a spot to cuddle and be loved, but also a home where she can still learn and discover everything that was denied to her so far. Walks together and new friends (four- and two-legged), toys, trips – life still has a lot in store for Mai, would you like to show her all these things?

About Mai

What life with Mai looks like

Mai is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mai, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mai?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mai on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mai if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mai already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mai isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mai and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
