Adopt Maja

Labrador Retriever · Female · Young · 3 years

Maja came to us due to an overload from her previous owner. She lived in a family with children from around six years old. Generally, Maja is friendly and people-oriented, but at our shelter, it has become clear that she can become quickly overwhelmed in certain situations and then shows clear defensive reactions, including targeted biting. There have already been several instances where she bit with serious intent.Maja is a very active, movement-loving female dog who loves long walks and mental stimulation. In her behavior, there is a certain ambivalence: on one hand, she is clingy, playful, and cuddly with her trusted people, while on the other hand, she reacts with clear aggression in stressful situations, showing pronounced defensive behavior. In everyday life, Maja confidently wears a muzzle, which she accepts well. This gives her security and supports the training. Currently, we are intensively working on the topics of resource defense, impulse control, and protective behavior towards trusted people. Maja is engaged in the training and shows promising progress. However, she requires an environment that offers her security and orientation through consistent and calm leadership. With fellow animals, Maja is generally social and communicative. She respects the boundaries of other dogs well and can also get along with more challenging dogs. At the animal shelter, she regularly spends time in dog contact groups, which she masters confidently. According to current assessment, she is also compatible with cats. For Maja, we are looking for a quiet, rural home with a securely fenced garden, preferably also with a confident second dog. Important are experienced, dog-savvy people with clear communication, patience, and the willingness to continue working on Maja's behavior. Whoever offers Maja a safe and structured framework will win a wise, loyal female dog that can develop great potential with the right guidance. Children should not live in the new home.

About Maja

What life with Maja looks like

Maja is a large young adult labrador retriever dog waiting at BMT Tierheim Arche Noah Stuhr in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Maja, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Maja?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. BMT Tierheim Arche Noah Stuhr handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Maja on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Maja if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — BMT Tierheim Arche Noah Stuhr will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Maja already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Maja isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with BMT Tierheim Arche Noah Stuhr early rather than rehoming privately; they know Maja and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
