Maja

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Adult · 4 years

Once again, the phone rang on the weekend, and a desperate young woman asked for help for a helpless kitten she had found by the roadside. The poor mouse was in a pitiful state, severely emaciated and disoriented. A visible injury and swelling around the eye were also noticeable. When asked by a neighbor whether the cat belonged to her, she received the response that "the" had been wandering around here for a few days, even though she kept chasing it away. Simply incredible how cold some people can be. Of course, we agreed that the kitten could be brought to the animal clinic immediately and that we would cover the costs, and that we would find a home for the kitten after treatment. At first, the little one needed an infusion, and it couldn't be said whether it would survive the night. Further examinations were not possible over the weekend. Unfortunately, the suspicion was confirmed that the kitten was blind, so we arranged a CT appointment. Perhaps, for this so loved and grateful snuggly cat, an operation could alleviate the pain. On Wednesday, we received the shocking diagnosis. At the junction of the two optic nerves, a malignant tumor was found, which is inoperable. We are accustomed to the worst, but such news suddenly leaves a lump in the throat. Of course, we knew what this meant for the poor mouse. But at that moment, we did not agree to sedation. The little fighter should at least still have a few beautiful weeks or months of a life of love and security. Heike, with love, took Maja into her foster home and made the impossible possible. For many days, the kitten's litter box wandered from one corner to another. All sorts of litter, even sand, were tried to convince Maja to use the litter box. Puppets were even bought. Finally, it was time, and Maja used the litter box more often. Fortunately, there were no problems with the other two cats in the foster home. Maja lies cuddled up with Mäusi on the sofa, as if they had always lived together. Maja can now enjoy many cuddles and good food every day and is so happy. We do not know how long the cortisone can hold back the tumor's growth, but every day is a happy day for Maja. From the bottom of our hearts, we wish that it will continue like this for a very long time. She has earned it so much.

DE·Show original

About Maja

What life with Maja looks like

Maja is a small adult mixed breed cat waiting at Kleiner Gnadenhof e.V. in Schwaan / OT Letschow.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Maja, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Maja?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Kleiner Gnadenhof e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Maja on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Maja if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Kleiner Gnadenhof e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Maja already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Maja isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Kleiner Gnadenhof e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Maja and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
