Makaio

adoption requirements adoption process Now request this animal! adoption requirements adoption process Now request this dog! The athletic and beautiful Makaio is a real sight. But behind his impressive appearance lies a young dog who never really had the chance to learn how a normal dog life works. When we visited him at the shelter in May, it was immediately clear how much he craves human proximity. He desperately wanted to escape the small pen and the loud shelter routine… at least for a few minutes. Out in the run, he appeared incredibly unkempt and simply wanted to enjoy our company. Makaio is an incredibly people-oriented, scruffy young male dog who just wants to belong. Behind the public shelter in Bistrița, Makaio now waits behind bars for his chance. Meanwhile, Makaio has already been through a lot. Together with his brothers Jaro and Caramelo, and his mother Baylee, he was rescued by Romanian animal welfare activists. The family lived for years in close quarters but still apart from each other, and they were often exposed to free-roaming dogs. Makaio had to learn to assert himself through body language and keep other dogs at a distance. That's why he shows insecurity and defensiveness in dog interactions, and his behavior is largely determined by his affinities. He needs his space and doesn't want to be pushed. This behavior is rooted in his past and should not be "trained away" with harshness. His future family should approach dog interactions calmly and thoughtfully, showing him that he doesn't have to control everything. Makaio needs confident people who can give him security and help him gather positive and corrective experiences. And most importantly, he needs to learn that a leash means safety, not being exposed to other dogs. Although his adolescence is behind him, Makaio still needs to learn the basics of dog behavior. What does a dog learn on a chain for years? Everyday things are still completely new to him. That's why he seeks out people with patience, understanding, and joy in showing him the world step by step. Even a visit to a positively working dog training class would surely delight Makaio, so he can catch up on everything he's been denied so far. At the shelter, Makaio also shows himself as an active young male dog who craves physical and mental stimulation. Walks, adventures, nose work, or shared activities would bring him great joy. At the same time, he is an absolute cuddle dog. As soon as the pen door opens, he just wants to be with a person, feel closeness, and be loved. Despite everything, Makaio has kept his big heart. He longs to find the right people who will see him and show him how wonderful a dog life can be. Makaio has already freed himself from the chain. Now, he just needs his people to show him that his life doesn't have to stay behind bars. Will you help him finally arrive and live the life he so deserves? Makaio is already packed and ready to go. He has his EU pet passport ready. He travels microchipped, vaccinated, neutered, dewormed, and flea-treated to his new home. Even a loving foster home would delight Makaio. A big thank you to Sarah, who gave Makaio his name and helped him take the first step into a new life. As of: 29.05. This animal was abandoned.

Vermittlungsvoraussetzungen Vermittlungsablauf Jetzt dieses Tier anfragen! Vermittlungsvoraussetzungen Vermittlungsablauf Jetzt diesen Hund anfragen! About Makaio

What life with Makaio looks like

Makaio is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. in München.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Makaio, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Makaio?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Makaio on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Makaio if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Makaio already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Makaio isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Makaio and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
