Adopt Makalu

Alaskan Malamute · Male · Senior · 10 years

Makalu is a calm and laid-back senior who quickly wins hearts with his relaxed demeanor. Despite his laid-back nature, he knows exactly what he wants and sometimes tries to charm his way through his stubbornness – typical of a Malamute. Due to his age, he already has some health issues. He underwent knee surgery not long ago, and he also has a larger tumor that needs to be monitored. Even when walking, his limitations are noticeable: long walks are no longer possible and tire him quickly. Much more to his liking is to lie in the shade, get some attention, and simply be with his people. However, it is important that Makalu continues to stay active and maintain his fitness within the limits of his abilities. Short, adapted walks and a quiet daily routine are good for him. Ideally, Makalu can stay with his friend Denali, and we find a place where both can live together. They have been living together for years and are very attached to each other. For Makalu, we are looking for a loving home with understanding people who can provide the necessary rest, patience, and medical care for an older dog. An apartment on one level or one with only a few steps would be ideal. Do you think you are the right person for Makalu or would you like to get to know him better?

About Makalu

What life with Makalu looks like

Makalu is a extra-large senior alaskan malamute dog waiting at Tierschutzverein für Tirol in Innsbruck.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Makalu, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Makalu?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein für Tirol handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Makalu on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Makalu if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein für Tirol will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Makalu already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Makalu isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein für Tirol early rather than rehoming privately; they know Makalu and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
