Adopt Mandala

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Puppy · 8 months

February and October are not just any months, not when working in Spanish animal protection. In October, the hunting season begins, and coursers sort through the animals that have survived the summer once more. Those not suitable for hunting are killed or abandoned. Something similar happens at the end of February, when excess dogs are disposed of (there is always enough - even self-produced - supply), and hundreds of these elegant four-legged beings end up in the animal shelter... However, if young dogs like our beautiful new arrivals Zhen and Mandala are taken in at the animal shelter in April, one must attribute both heartlessness and stupidity to the coursers who produced these puppies just to get rid of them later. Whatever the case, in Huelva, in the animal pension of our friends from Puntanimals, two wonderful greyhounds have been living since spring, waiting for someone to show them how beautiful it is to be a beloved family dog. Mandala and Zhen came very unsettled into the care of our partners, probably they had seen nothing more than a dark barn. Quickly, both found their place among their four-legged companions and were happy about the newly gained security and regular meals, which also ensured that the two worry-worms no longer looked like skeletons with fur. Zhen, the caramel-colored super athlete, is gradually developing into a cheerful, sociable teenager. At eight months old (as of May 2021), he enjoys testing his strength against other young dogs, runs energetically through the yard, and now finds it great when volunteers take him for walks, play with him, and cuddle him from head to toe. Zhen is therefore looking for an active family ready to deal with the characteristics of sighthounds. Zhen is already looking forward to starting a job as a personal trainer for athletic people, whose daily routine he can turn upside down with his flapping ears. Mandala, on the other hand, is a shy princess when it comes to interacting with bipeds. Initially, she only lay in a quiet corner of the yard and sadly watched the other dogs playing. But now she also joins the other young dogs very happily and is persuaded by Zhen to play along. However, she is still very reserved towards people, avoids closeness (but then again goes back to the staff of Puntanimals on her own - she really wants to, but doesn't dare). What our timid little fish Mandala needs is calm, security, fixed trusted people, patience, and love. All of this is hard to provide at the animal shelter - and so we hope we will find these very special people who are willing and able to embark on the adventure of "frightened sighthound". Often it only takes a few days until our mimosas start seeking tender contact and quickly turn into real cuddle machines.

About Mandala

What life with Mandala looks like

Mandala is a puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mandala, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mandala?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mandala on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mandala if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mandala already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mandala isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mandala and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
