Mathilda - active little whirlwind seeks new degu companion Mathilda is a female degu born in November 2020. Although she is now one of the more experienced degu ladies, she is anything but a retiree. Mathilda is a small "ADHD degu": curious, active, always busy and very interested in her surroundings and her people. She especially loves her exercise wheel and anything that can be disassembled in some way. Toilet paper rolls are expertly disassembled with great enthusiasm. Mathilda is pleasantly uncomplicated about food and eats almost everything. At around 275g, she is well-fed. Mathilda is very affectionate and tame towards people. She likes to come to the hand, seek interaction and look curiously at what's going on around her. However, extensive stroking is not really one of her passions. Mathilda likes to decide for herself when and how much closeness is just right. In dealing with her sister, Mathilda was the dominant character and knew exactly what she wanted. How she behaves in a socialization with her hitherto unknown degu cousins, I can not estimate, as she has lived together with her sister Hermine so far. Mathilda currently has no health problems or known illnesses. She is fit, active and still has a strong need for movement. After her sister Hermine unfortunately fell asleep, Mathilda now lives alone. Since degu's need for company and I don't want to keep her alone permanently, I am looking for a new, loving home for her, where she gets suitable degu company again and can spend many more beautiful years. I am happy to drive to interested parties or bring Mathilda a bit on the way to her new home. A handover is possible within a radius of about 200 km.

About Mathilda

What life with Mathilda looks like

Mathilda is a large adult mixed breed animal waiting at Deguhilfe Süd e.V. in Obermichelbach.

Every animal has their own temperament and history. The shelter knows Mathilda far better than any listing can convey — ask about daily routine, ideal household, and what kind of adopter they're hoping for.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mathilda, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mathilda?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Deguhilfe Süd e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mathilda on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mathilda if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Deguhilfe Süd e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mathilda already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most animals on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mathilda isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Deguhilfe Süd e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mathilda and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
