Adopt Max

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 11 years

Max had to leave his foster home unfortunately, as it became clear that living together was no longer suitable for everyone. Over time, it became increasingly evident that he prefers a home with a single female person. Max has shown very controlling behavior and has defended his primary caregiver. Therefore, we are now looking for a home for the still quite agile and confident Sturkopf with a single woman who will show him that he needs to follow clear rules. Max has recovered faster than we expected. Therefore, he is already looking for a suitable home where he will continue to be well cared for. Thanks to the loving care from the foster home, Max has quickly gotten back on his feet. Currently, he is able to go for walks with the dogs living at the foster home. In case he is no longer able to walk, a dog van is always available for Max. He loves to cuddle and could be spoiled for days if he could. Unfortunately, Max still has problems with being alone; this needs to be trained. He currently needs medication because he has struvite stones. The little heartbreaker is quite self-assured in some situations and knows exactly what he wants. Therefore, he needs consistent training. To support his further recovery, it is recommended to undergo physical therapy. Since Max should avoid climbing stairs as much as possible, an ground-floor home would be ideal. Max had several disc problems and was recently operated on. His recovery is currently a top priority. Since one of his hind legs did not work as expected at the beginning, he is currently being trained at the foster home with lots of love and intensity to be able to walk and stand independently. It is possible that he will continue to need supportive physical therapy after this process.

About Max

What life with Max looks like

Max is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Velbert in Velbert.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Max, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Max?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Velbert handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Max on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Max if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Velbert will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Max already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Max isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Velbert early rather than rehoming privately; they know Max and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
