Adopt Max

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

"Beloved Hitzkopf" Gender: male, neutered Date of Birth: July 2017 In animal shelter since: July 2021 Gets along with dogs: no Children in the same household: no Home sought: a quiet home with a secure backyard for people with dog experience in a low-arousal area, without children The fluffy, 2017-born mixed-breed male dog Max needs a get-to-know phase with people to build trust. Max has made significant training progress. He already walks calmly past people, cyclists, and cars – he just wants to see them coming. Social walks with fellow animals are also possible. Water is his absolute element; in summer and winter, he likes to splash around in knee-high water to cool off. Additionally, Max now knows recall (even during a chase for crows), heel, can be sent to his place, and can meet strangers through respectful sniffing and turning away without getting stressed. Approaching busy streets is currently being practiced with him. Max only shows reactivity when he is startled (especially when approached from behind) or when dogs stare at him. Once he has calmed down, he wants to leave the situation. "I am Max, a medium-sized, well-built Golden Retriever(?)-mixed breed, I love walks, water, and being outdoors, so a house with a garden would be ideal for me. In a quiet environment, I walk calmly on a leash and now master many basic commands, as well as cue words that I can easily be distracted with – I don't want to get excited! I have learned to meet encounters with dogs, people, cars, bicycles, etc., calmly. If something does surprise me – standing firm and showing strength on your part is no mistake – you will need it less and less. I know cats from walks, they don't really impress me, but I don't know if I can live with them. With children, one must be careful, I am boisterous, energized, and strong, so I do not trust myself to do that! I can also ride in the car. As I have never had a home before, having my own room or a separate area where I can relax and rest would be advantageous. But I would be thrilled if someone out there is willing to give it a try with me – and take me as I am! One more small thing: please take your time

About Max

What life with Max looks like

Max is a small senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutz Austria in Vienna.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Max, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Max?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Austria handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Max on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Max if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Austria will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Max already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Max isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Austria early rather than rehoming privately; they know Max and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
