Adopt Medal

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 11 years

Medal, a dog born in 2015. Medal is a lanky, calm dog who is no longer in his prime, but is still a lively pup. At the beginning of his stay with us, he was shy and afraid to approach the kennel bars. He spent most of his time in the run. It took some time, but with each day, it got better. Despite his behavior towards unfamiliar places and people, Medal tried to overcome his fear. He began to approach people and seek contact. At first, it was a very cautious move, but each morning brought further improvement. We don't know what caused him to end up on the street. Unfortunately, his past is and will remain unknown to us. Nonetheless, we wanted to try working with him and improving his behavior, both towards us and other animals. It turned out that Medal needed to learn to walk on a leash, as he wasn't quite getting the hang of it. It seemed he hadn't had much experience with it in the past. Then came the time for the dog to get acquainted with other animal shelter companions. To our surprise, on the play area, the little dog stood still, not moving an inch, while other animals ran and jumped around him. Initially, he growled under his breath whenever any animal tried to make contact with him. It was clear that he didn't like this new and unusual situation. However, he didn't attack and watched them with curious eyes. After a few minutes, Medal felt safe enough to walk around the play area with a certain amount of caution. Unfortunately, he didn't play with other puppies, but getting out to the play area began to please him. It even came to the point where he approached the staff and waited for a pat on the head. We are very happy that the dog was able to trust us. For us, this is a true source of pride that animals, despite a difficult life and challenging situations, can still open up to humans and give them a chance. We would very much like Medalek to find a quick adoption and a home full of love and warmth. Without a doubt, the dog will repay this with great love and devotion. Medal is microchipped, neutered, vaccinated, and dewormed.

Medal, pies urodzony w 2015r. Mimo wszystko chcieliśmy spróbować popracować nad nim i nad jego zachowaniem zarówno w stosunku do nas jaki i do innych zwierząt.

About Medal

What life with Medal looks like

Medal is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) in Poland.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Medal, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Medal?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Medal on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Medal if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Medal already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Medal isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Medal and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
