Melendi

German Shepherd · Male · Young · 2 years

Melendi - a German shepherd dog is looking for a loving home. Melendi is a young German shepherd currently living in Spain. Unfortunately, we know nothing about his background. Although he has now moved to a foster home (see update), potential adopters should be prepared that Melendi may still need to learn many things important for living in a household. German shepherds are generally intelligent, hardworking, and sensitive dogs. They need mental and physical stimulation and require clear, reliable leadership as well as stable structures. In addition to exercise, rest periods, orientation towards people, and a stable bond are essential for them to live balanced lives. A shepherd dog is not one that just walks alongside, but one that wants to be actively involved in daily life. For Melendi, we wish for people who are consciously aware of the responsibility that comes with taking in a dog from animal protection. Moving into a home is a major change that requires time, patience, and empathy. Setbacks and uncertainties are also part of this, along with learning processes. Update February 2026: During an evacuation of the shelter due to heavy rainfall, Melendi temporarily moved into a foster family. There, he shows how much potential he has. He quickly adapted, gets along very well with the other dogs, and has developed a close bond with his humans. Melendi appears very affectionate, attached, and people-oriented - he prefers to be near his caregivers. He enjoys the newly gained freedom to move around and loves to play, run, and explore his surroundings. These experiences outside the shelter have clearly benefited him and show how much he would benefit from a stable home. Nevertheless, this handsome guy is still looking for a home or a foster home in Germany. Going back to a shelter cage would be a difficult adjustment for him, and we hope that this will be spared for Melendi. He is waiting for his crucial chance. Help? Here are Melendi's videos: Video 1 Video 2 Ideally, we are looking for a home for Melendi. At the current time, however, a foster home would also be a great help and a huge improvement for Melendi's life.

About Melendi

What life with Melendi looks like

Melendi is a large young adult german shepherd dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Melendi, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Melendi?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Melendi on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Melendi if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Melendi already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Melendi isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Melendi and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
