Adopt Meren

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 2 years

History/Description The sibling puppies Alexia, Meren and Dero were secured in a live trap in December 2021 after being found alone on the street. From the start, they were very fearful and are still hard to handle today. They now accept their caretaker Salva in their vicinity, but they barely venture out when many volunteers are at the animal shelter on weekends. They get along well with other dogs and particularly enjoyed the company of Luko, a sturdy, character-strong male dog, whom they tried to encourage to play regularly. Unfortunately, Luko lost his battle with cancer, leaving a large gap at the animal shelter. Meren has already endured a lot in his young life. When he was about a few months old, he broke both front legs while playing. Due to his fear, medical care was a significant challenge. As he needed close monitoring during the healing phase, he was temporarily placed with a local trainer. There, he made only small progress in interacting with people—his left front leg would not heal. Finally, in April 2024, amputation was unavoidable. After the surgery, Meren was so afraid in the clinic that Eric had to pick him up and bring him back to the animal shelter, where he quickly adapted to walking on three legs. Today, he is physically stable, but his fear of strangers is still very pronounced. Even his caretaker Salva cannot approach him—though he no longer runs away from him. Currently, Meren and Dero are still searching for their place. At the animal shelter, they still sleep snuggled closely together in a bed, despite having enough room for more. This closeness gives them security. As they are so shy, we are looking for very quiet homes for Meren and Dero—ideally with a confident single dog who can provide them with guidance. They can be rehomed together or separately, but never as single dogs. Their new families must bring something very important: a lot of patience, empathy, and the willingness to give them time. Just Meren has shown that despite all the difficulties, he can still fight—now he just needs someone to fight for him. Who gives these special dogs a chance? Siblings of Meren:

About Meren

What life with Meren looks like

Meren is a small young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutz Pur e.V. in Kettershausen.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Meren, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Meren?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Pur e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Meren on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Meren if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Pur e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Meren already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Meren isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Pur e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Meren and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
