Merina

Mixed Breed · Female · Puppy

Mixed-breed Merina - shy female dog seeks patient people Merina is a young mixed-breed female dog and one of eight siblings. Together with Rodri, Olmo, Cucurella, Cubarsi, and Simon, she came to the animal shelter as a small puppy. After her difficult start, Merina was able to move to a foster home and is making good progress there. The young dog is very affectionate, but is still very shy around people. She can now allow gentle touches if approached slowly and gently. After just a few days in her foster home, she began to thaw and feel more confident. Nevertheless, she still needs time, patience, and people who don't put pressure on her. Merina feels much more comfortable around other dogs. She loves her four-legged friends and is strongly influenced by them. A friendly and confident canine companion could therefore help her to gain more trust and become more confident. We are looking for a quiet home for Merina with understanding people who know that trust does not develop overnight. Children should already be older and able to respect their needs. A suitable long-term foster home would also be a great help. Merina is still a very young dog and has her whole life ahead of her. She needs people who can give her the security she has been missing and are willing to celebrate every small step with her. Then, the cautious little dog can gradually become a happy and confident companion. Ideally, we are looking for a home for the sweet girl. At the moment, however, a foster home would also be a great help and a huge improvement for Merina's life. Here are Merina's videos: Video 1 Video 2

About Merina

What life with Merina looks like

Merina is a large puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Merina, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Merina?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Merina on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Merina if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Merina already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Merina isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Merina and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
