Merlin

Male · Senior · 10 years

Meet Merlin! Merlin is an energetic, cheeky character of a dog half his age! Don’t let Merlin’s age fool you – this boy is very active and full of life. He’s a giddy, playful Terrier who absolutely loves having fun and will happily keep you entertained with his antics. Merlin loves toys and balls and is always ready for a game. Like many Terriers, he can get rather enthusiastic during play and can be a little mouthy, so his new adopter will need to understand his play style and help him learn appropriate boundaries. He is also a vocal boy and isn’t afraid to let you know what he thinks! Merlin is a real character with plenty of Terrier spirit and a cheeky personality. Merlin is a bit of an escape artist, so his new home will need to be secure and his adopters will need to be mindful of his ability to find an opportunity to make an exit. He also enjoys digging up grass, so anyone hoping for a perfectly manicured lawn may need to rethink their expectations. Merlin can be quite jumpy, particularly when excited, and his new family will need to work with him calmly and consistently on this behaviour. He is very unsure about being brushed and does not like his back end being touched. Merlin has been checked over by the vet and there are no health concerns identified, but this is something his adopters will need to be aware of and respect. He may need time, patience and positive experiences to build up his confidence around grooming and handling. Merlin also doesn’t particularly enjoy visiting the vets and has needed to be muzzled during veterinary handling. His future family should therefore be prepared to continue using sensible precautions and work at his pace when it comes to handling. Merlin needs an experienced, understanding home who appreciates the wonderful – and sometimes challenging qualities that come with a feisty Terrier. He will need plenty of exercise, play, mental stimulation and a secure outdoor space, along with people who are prepared to put the time into helping him with his manners and handling. In return, Merlin will give you bags of personality, fun and affection. He is a lively, cheeky old boy who clearly hasn’t realised he’s supposed to be slowing down! If you are looking for a quiet, sedate 10 year old, merlin probably isn’t your man. But if you love giddy, playful, vocal, mischievous Terriers with big personalities, merlin could be the boy for you. Merlin has socialised well with other dogs whilst in our care, so we do feel he could be rehomed with another older small dog following a successful meet and greet. As Merlin came into the home as a stray, we have no previous history on him and as he can be touch sensitive we would prefer any children/visiting children in the home to be 16+ years.

About Merlin

What life with Merlin looks like

Merlin is a small senior dog waiting at Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) in Manchester.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Merlin, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Merlin?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Merlin on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Merlin if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Merlin already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Merlin isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Merlin and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
