Merlot came to us as a tiny puppy, together with his five siblings. Back then, all the babies were very scared. A couple approached us cautiously, the rest hid, and Merlot was the only one who showed his teeth. As if he had taken it upon himself to protect the whole family, to prove he was the bravest, the most fearless. It took just a few days and a handful of treats for them to become puppies again. Merlot broke into big smiles for a piece of salami. When the toys came out, he was the first and the best. He knew exactly what to do, how to chase, how to catch, how to “defeat” that poor stuffed toy that stood no chance against his puppy teeth. Then came the walks, and everything else that carries a puppy from “baby” to “I’ve got this” adolescence. Time passed, and now he is a young adult who learns quickly when guided the right way. He is smart, playful, and good natured, with a rare tenderness. Out of nowhere, he will tuck his nose into your arms, as if trying to stay there forever. His fluffy coat, the spark in his eyes, and his character make a combination that is hard to miss. We find ourselves loving him more every day. Watching him grow up in the shelter, we cannot help but wonder why. Why has he not found his person yet? He lacks nothing. We truly believe he has everything it takes to become an exceptional companion.
