Mike – platziert

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 14 years

Mike is a black-and-white-brown (pinto) American Akita male dog, born in September 2013. He stands 73 cm at the shoulder and weighs around 53 kg and is searching for a new home because, after two biting incidents during dog encounters outside, his owner can only walk him with great personal tension due to the two biting incidents. Mike is a cuddly bear, open and friendly towards people, and likes to be around his people. His favorite position is lying next to someone. He is also friendly towards strangers. He lives peacefully with two small dogs (French Bulldog R. and Stafford Bullterrier H.) at the moment and spends a lot of time outside in the garden. He barks only when someone comes close to the property. Unfortunately, Mike does not accept any dogs outside. During the two biting incidents, he injured small dogs. In the first biting incident, someone left the garden gate open. An opportunity for Mike to go on a solo walk and fight with a 12 kg male dog, which resulted in an injury to the dog’s rear. The second biting incident occurred while cycling. In an unclear curve, his owner fell off his bike while meeting a walker and her dog. Mike took the opportunity, calmly approached the 15 kg dog, and also injured it. In both cases, a trip to the vet was necessary. Mike must be securely housed at home so that he cannot leave the premises. An 180 cm fence is required so that he cannot go on a solo walk. Mike does not get along with male dogs, except if a puppy joins the family. With female dogs, he gets along well due to sympathy. Mike has attended dog training classes. He knows the commands Sit, Down, Here, Heel, Stay, Turn. The new people in Mike’s life should be athletic because he enjoys cycling or jogging with them. Mike has a prey drive. He cannot be loaned out outside. From a distance, he can be called, but if he is a bit further away, he ignores the command and continues to walk briskly. We are looking for a quiet home for Mike with Akita dog experience. Preferably in a rural area with a garden, and possibly as a second dog to a confident female dog. Children should be at least 14 years old, sensible, and dog-experienced. An adoption fee is charged for Mike. For inquiries, please contact us at the following number: 44.

DE·Show original

About Mike – platziert

What life with Mike – platziert looks like

Mike – platziert is a small senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzbund Basel Regional.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mike – platziert, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mike – platziert?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzbund Basel Regional handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mike – platziert on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mike – platziert if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzbund Basel Regional will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mike – platziert already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mike – platziert isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzbund Basel Regional early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mike – platziert and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
