Millet

Male Β· Adult Β· 4 years

This handsome fellow is our Millet, a male grass parakeet, born in 2022. Millet was given up to us because he was no longer happy in his previous home. Despite being allowed to fly freely and receiving a lot of attention, he became increasingly unhappy, refused to fly around, and ate poorly. With a heavy heart, but for the health of Millet, his owners therefore decided to give him up to us. In the shelter, we see Millet slowly becoming happier again. He finds it extremely cozy with the other grass parakeets, eats like a boat worker again, and is starting to let his voice be heard again. Time for Millet to find a new home, but then a home WITH other grass parakeets. Further a cozy household with attention and the possibility to fly freely. We assume that Millet will become his own person again. For now, he waits calmly with his fellow species in the shelter for that 5-star home.

NLΒ·Show original

About Millet

What life with Millet looks like

Millet is an adult bird waiting at Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden in Leiden.

Birds are long-lived, social, and noisy. The species and individual history matter enormously β€” ex-companion parrots can carry strong attachments and trauma. Ask the shelter about their daily routine, diet, and whether they'd do best alone or with a flockmate.

πŸ‡³πŸ‡±Adopting from Netherlands

Paperwork, vet checks and transport rules differ by species and by country. Ask the shelter what is included and what you will need to arrange before you commit.

Frequently asked

Adopting Millet, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Millet?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden handles screening and the adoption contract directly β€” TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Millet on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Millet if I live in another country?
Sometimes. Whether a bird can move between countries depends on the species and the rules in both countries, and some species need permits or have restrictions. Ask Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden what paperwork and transport they require, and check the import rules of your country before you commit.
Is Millet already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
What a bird comes with (vet checks, vaccinations, identification, paperwork) varies by shelter and species. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported β€” ask Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden directly what is included and what Millet still needs.
What happens if Millet isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work β€” that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden early rather than rehoming privately; they know Millet and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect β€” names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
