Mirko

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 11 years

In his previous home, Mirko sat on his throne for eight years and got by with everything that came to mind, not hesitating to use his teeth in these situations. Currently, the senior has been in our care for two years and has adapted well to shelter life with all its challenges. Mirko grew up on the streets of Romania, so he quickly learns who he can interact with: Any unsure behavior from his counterpart is immediately exploited by him. However, whoever clearly shows Mirko how the hare hops has the best cards – although this does not mean that he will tolerate everything. He is still ready to use his teeth. Currently, Mirko is in the care of animal attendants, where he sometimes lives together with other dogs and cats. He has immediately found his place in the group and was open to the animal community from the start, but of course, he does not tolerate everything. Mirko can sometimes be very provocative, which is why he runs with a muzzle within a dog group. Visitors greet Mirko friendly, he comes to rest independently, walks loosely on the leash, and can easily stay alone. Here, Mirko has already learned a lot that is important for a healthy human-dog relationship. Even on his foster home, he experiences a lot and sniffs the scent of a real home. Moreover, Mirkos potential is not underestimated: Despite his age and fluffy appearance, the male dog always has the ambition to reclaim the long-lost throne. Until Mirko finds his forever home, we are happy to have animal-loving people who support him with a foster parentship.

DE·Show original

About Mirko

What life with Mirko looks like

Mirko is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Hamburger Tierschutzverein in Hamburg.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mirko, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mirko?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hamburger Tierschutzverein handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mirko on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mirko if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hamburger Tierschutzverein will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Mirko already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mirko isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hamburger Tierschutzverein early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mirko and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
