Mortadelo &#8211

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy · 6 months

Mortadello is a small mixed breed, weighing in at just over 5kg, who actually tried to seduce a doggy lady at the beach. Morta and his friend File had made some plans for that memorable day – and they were lucky, because it was their charm that caught the attention of the laughing beachgoers. The animal friends at the beach tried to spot the owners of the two highly motivated male dogs, but soon it was clear that no one was looking for them. Upon closer inspection, there was no doubt that no one had cared for the two friends for a long time. The animal welfare workers from Refugio Kimba, who were informed shortly thereafter, brought the pair to the vet, where their sore paws, skin injuries, and infected ears were treated. A preliminary test for Mediterranean diseases revealed that Mortadello was positive for leishmaniasis and also suffered from heartworms. The worm treatment is nearly complete, and his leishmaniasis test showed only that he had been in contact with leishmaniasis at some point – which is not an indication of an active infection. Currently, Morta is not receiving any therapy but will be retested when he has recovered. We recommend that his new owners have him tested regularly (every 6 months) to ensure no outbreak is missed – the earlier treatment begins in case of an outbreak, the better the chances that the infection will quietly subside. Mortadello initially lived at the animal shelter with File, but even though the two have no fear of large dogs – as they impressively demonstrated – the risk of injury in a large pack for low-to-the-ground models is very high. Therefore, the smallest dogs in the shelters unfortunately spend most of their time in the yard. To support Mortadello in his healing process and to prevent the little human-friendly six-year-old (as of August 2025) from becoming accustomed to concrete floors and bars, Morta was moved to a foster home. There, he lives with several other dogs, though they are more in his size category. The foster home describes Mort as friendly and open, he is curious and very cuddly (and on any couch, he makes a very decorative presence!). Morta is happy to be on the go and knows how to behave on a leash. Life on the street has made him charming and intelligent, a heartbreaker who also gets along well with other four-legged friends and quickly finds companions. If you want to give our witty four-legged sausage specialty a home where Morta can find enough balls, soft cushions, and treats in his pockets, we look forward to hearing from you soon!

DE·Show original

About Mortadelo &#8211

What life with Mortadelo &#8211 looks like

Mortadelo &#8211 is a small puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mortadelo &#8211, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mortadelo &#8211?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mortadelo &#8211 on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mortadelo &#8211 if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mortadelo &#8211 already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mortadelo &#8211 isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mortadelo &#8211 and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
