Nala

European Shorthair · Female · Senior · 12 years

Nala – an older female cat with her own mind is looking for a new home. Sometimes things in a cat's life change without them being able to do anything about it. This was also the case with our Nala. Nala was born in the summer of 2014 and has lived with us for many years. Originally, she was a pure indoor cat. Since the birth of our first child, her behavior when defecating has changed. Our son is now almost five years old and we have tried many things to find a solution - including several litter boxes and various changes in her environment. In the meantime, Nala goes almost exclusively to the litter box outside - unfortunately, not only in our garden, but also in the gardens of our neighbors. This has become a big burden for us. At the same time, we have experienced that she does not show this behavior everywhere: When Nala is with other people, she has not defecated in their apartment or garden. Even when she stayed with different people on vacation, there were no problems. She also got along very well with the neighbor's dog and even accepted it without problems. That's why we believe that the situation with us is strongly related to her living situation and family life, and that a quieter home could be a real chance for Nala to get rid of this problem. Of course, we can't promise that - but her previous experiences with other people give us hope. Nala is a friendly and rather independent cat. She is not a classic cuddly cat that you can pick up and cuddle at any time. She decides for herself when she wants closeness. But when it gets cozy in the evening, she comes to you on her own and likes to sit on your lap. Then she enjoys her petting in her own way. She is also very open to new people. She lets herself be approached by new people and has already stayed with different people on vacation. So she can easily adapt to new situations. She also got along very well with the neighbor's dog. Nala is now 12 years old and we wish her a quiet home where she can enjoy her old age. A household without small children would be particularly suitable for her, as she increasingly withdraws from our family life with children. Nala has lived as a single cat so far and does not know living with other cats. That's why we also want her to continue to live as a single cat. Maybe Nala is just the right cat for people who are looking for an independent, older personality who decides for herself when she wants company and closeness. She doesn't need constant attention, but people who respect her independence and give her a quiet place. We know that it's not easy to find a new home for a 12-year-old cat. Nevertheless, we don't want to just put Nala somewhere. She has been a part of our family for many years and we have tried for a long time to find a solution that works for everyone. Now we believe that a quieter home without small children could be the better chance for Nala to really relax again. Name: Nala. Born: Summer 2014. Age: 12 years. Sex: female, neutered. Name: Nala. Geboren: Sommer 2014Alter: 12 Jahre. About Nala

What life with Nala looks like

Nala is a large senior european shorthair cat waiting at Tierhelfer Ingelheim e. V. in Germany.

Senior cats are the gentlest house guests: predictable, mostly silent, and grateful for a sunny windowsill. Older cats often have minor dental or kidney issues — keep an eye on water intake and weight. Many sleep eighteen hours a day and want no part of any drama.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nala, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nala?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierhelfer Ingelheim e. V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nala on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nala if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierhelfer Ingelheim e. V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nala already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nala isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierhelfer Ingelheim e. V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nala and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
