Nela

Mixed Breed · Unknown

Because there are a huge number of dogs in need of help in Romania, various dog shelters can be found in every city. There are both notorious public shelters and private shelters, whose size varies from a few dogs to hundreds. Unfortunately, many of the private shelters also have conditions that are very poor for the dogs. Often, the shelter started with the desire to help, but maintaining several dogs soon became too difficult. Resources may not have been sufficient and, eventually, the shelter and the dogs living there ended up in bad condition. In such situations, animal protection activists working in Romania try their best to help, so that the dogs can find places in better private shelters. A few years ago, Claudia, who was running the Eli for Animals association, found herself in such a situation when 30 dogs were found in very bad conditions at a private shelter. Together with a few other animal protectors, she took care of the dogs and began searching for homes for them. Fortunately, all the other rescued dogs found homes eventually, except for the remaining siblings Gina and Nela. Later, Gina was able to go to Finland via Emblan and finally to her own home, but Nela is still waiting in Romania for his turn. Nela has lived his whole life in the shelter kennel, so it's no surprise that he is cautious towards new and strange things. He does come curiously to look at visitors' activities in the yard and eats treats offered by hand, but actual contact with strangers is too stressful for Nel. However, he is much more relaxed with familiar people. He likes being petted and also allows himself to be handled nicely. He has gotten along well with all the dogs in the shelter kennel.

About Nela

What life with Nela looks like

Nela is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Embla Rescue in Helsinki.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇫🇮Adopting from Finland

Finnish shelters require a home visit and an adoption contract. Animals are vetted; the EU pet passport covers cross-border travel within the bloc.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nela, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nela?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Embla Rescue handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nela on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nela if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Embla Rescue will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nela already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nela isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Embla Rescue early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nela and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FI). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
